I FALL DOWN
I Fall Down is an immersive performance across four gallery spaces. Gina Moxley, a former art student, begins by referring to what was her introductory bible to art history - EH Gombrich's The Story of Art in which not a single female artist was mentioned. Enflamed by that erasure and inspired by Florence Syndrome, an actual malady where the afflicted are so overwhelmed by the mix of travel and beauty that they fall into a psychotic state. But the masterpieces of history's most celebrated artists left Moxley disappointed and utterly unmoved. The innocent and idealized classical sculptures of women, with their incomplete anatomy and their downcast eyes, send her over the edge. A wild combination of contemporary movement, video and sound installation, opera and bare faced cheek, the audience join the cast in a brazen attempt to right the wrongs of some of the most celebrated works in art history. A restoration comedy, so to speak.

"I Fall Down is fun, funny and unapologetically feminist."

A NOTE from GINA MOXLEY
The idea for I Fall Down was sparked by reading about Florence Syndrome, where the tourist is so overwhelmed by the stress of travel and the immense beauty of art that they experience panic attacks, fainting, amnesia, and in extreme cases, temporary madness. An art attack basically.
So, off I went to Florence hoping to be swept away by beauty and art, but discovered the plight of sex workers during Covid instead. The sobering reality. Visiting the famous galleries I wasn’t so much affected by the beauty of the art, rather perplexed by the classical female statue’s lack of genitals.
When I read about the major building developments that were happening in the Crawford, I thought that here was an opportunity to right an historic wrong. I was a student there from 1974 - 1978 and our main textbook, The Story of Art, didn't feature a single female artist since the dawn of time. Not a single one.
Now is our chance to boldly re-insert women into the frame.
Join us for this mischievous restoration as we range through the galleries gum in cheek. And be prepared to get your hands dirty!
